AB PLC Series With Supporting Programming Software, I/O range.

Hello All, In Today's post i am going to tell you about series of AB PLC with their I/O capacity and supporting software's .

AB PLC are categorized into 7 PLC series depending on their I/O capacity and memory and other functionality.

So depending on the series it has various communication software's (like RSlinxGateway, RSlinxClassic), Programming software's (Like PicoSoft, RSlinx500 English Pro,RSlinx5 English Pro, RSlinx 5000 English Pro) and a Simulation Software(Like RSLogix Emulate500, RSLogix Emulate5 and RSLogixEmulate5000)

1) Pico Series:-

  • The first series of AB PLC is a Pico series.
  • This series of AB PLC comes with maximum 32 I/O capacity depending on the customer requirement.
  • For communicating the programming devices to the PLC we need a RSLinx Gateway software, and for programming the ladder logic we need Pico soft.
  • The Pico series does not provide support for simulation so it doesn't have a simulation software. 
  • As the Pico series is made for small no of I/O operations, it is a most economical controller and used for performing simple logic operations, simple timing and counting operations.
  • To check your logic of your program you need a hardware of Pico PLC series.

2) Micrologix Series:-

  • This is the second series of the AB PLC.
  • This Series comes with maximum 512 I/O capacity and 1k Program memory.
  • Depending upon the I/O's this series is again classified into 5 sub-series as Micrlogix1000(for max 32 I/O's), Micrologix1100( for max 64 I/O's), Mirologix1200(for max 128 I/O's), Micrologix1400(for max 256 I/O's), Micrologix1500(for max 512 I/O's).
  • For communication between the Programming devices to the PLC we need RSLinx Gateway Software.

  • For building the ladder logic we need RSLogix500 English Pro - Programming Software.
  • To check your ladder logic program without hardware you need a RSLogix Emulate500 simulation software so you can check your logic without downloading the program into the processor of the PLC.

3) SLC 500 Series :-

  • SLC is a abbreviation of Sequential Logic Control, this is a third series of AB PLC and it comes with maximum 4096 I/O's Capacity.
  • Same like the Mirologix series this series is also divided into sub-series depending on the I/O capacity and a memory size.
  • Sub-series of the SLC500 are :-

SLC 5/01(comes with 4k program memory and maximum  960 I/O's).

SLC 5/02 (comes with 8k program memory and max. 4096 I/O's). 

SLC 5/03(comes with 16k program memory and max. 4096 I/O's).

SLC 5/04(comes with 32k program memory and max. 4096 I/O's).

SLC 5/05(comes with 64k program memory and max. 4096 I/O's). 

  • It uses the same communicatio, Programming, and a Simulation software as Micrologix series i.e. RSLinx Gateway, RSLogix500 English Pro,RSLogix Emulator 500 respectively.

 4) PLC-5 Series :-

  • This is the forth series of AB PLC which can support maximum 10,000 I/O's 
  • Depending upon the specifications it is again classified in various categories like PLC 5/05, PLC 5/10, PLC 5/15 .........Up to the PLC 5/55.
  • For communication, Programming, and for simulation is has RSLinx Classic, RSLogix5 English Pro and RSLogix Emulate 5 respectively.
  • It finds applications  where we require more I/O's Upto 10000.

  • These three series of AB PLC are capable to handle large no of I/O's.
  • The Compact Logix PLC can handle up to 40,000 I/O's.
  • The Flex Logix can handle up to 60,000 I/O's.
  • The Control Logix can handle up to 1,28,000 I/O's.
  • These three series use same communication, programming and simulation software as RSlinx Classic,RSLogix5000 English Pro and RSLogix Emulate5000 respectively.

Timer :- Timer is nothing but a specialized clock in a programming software used to count the preset time intervals.
